In 2010 Innovate UK launched the Building Performance Evaluation programme to address the performance gap challenge in new buildings.
Over the past 4 years the programme has endeavoured to investigate the gap between designers’ objectives and what actually happens when occupants move in, and why the performance gap is such a common occurrence. In total the activity has supported over 100 successful projects, both domestic and non-domestic. From schools to supermarkets, offices to health centres, detached houses to high-density flats, the portfolio covers a range of build types, uses and sustainability ratings.
The active project stage of the competition has recently completed; and as the programme begins to draw to a close, the significant body of work that has been produced is being collated and reviewed. The findings from the studies are giving insights on the performance of various design strategies, building fabric, target performances, construction methods and occupancy patterns, handover and operational practices.
